HISTORY OF THE CELTIC CHURCH

FROM ITS INCEPTION TO 1153

  • This work, written by Reverend James Arthur MacClannahan Hanna and originally published in 1962, traces the history of the Celtic Church from its origins until 1153. The author firmly argues that this institution was independent of Rome, claiming that it had its own structure and traditions derived from the East.
  • Through a study of major figures such as Saint Ninian and Saint Columba, the text explores the missionary zeal that made it possible to evangelize a large part of Europe.
  • The book also examines the gradual transition to Roman Catholicism, a process that was completed under the reign of David I.
  • This research aims to rehabilitate the unique identity of Celtic Christians in the face of medieval historical accounts that it considers biased.
